I’ve been racing 1/5 scale since 2008 and I can tell you that the engine department of these vehicles has seen little change. Sure there’s more power, different pipes and even different cooling heads, the but the clutch system has not seen any more changes other than maybe a different spring tension…
…until now. MIP has just announced this incredibly innovative 8-shoe racing clutch designed for use with most 1/5 scale trucks. I say MOST simply because this system provides a lighter, longer lasting clutch that exhibits more punch than the stock unit. This makes it great for Losi owners (both 5IVE-T and DBXL) but might make it a bit difficult to drive for 2WD vehicles. I’ve got a couple coming for review so I will let you know more about that.
MIP says this new clutch allows the motor to spool up quicker and is completely rebuildable … in easy fashion! So far, this new clutch seems like it’s going to be a huge hit with the 1/5 scale fans!

Can you please inform me of problems with the New MIP clutch in 2 wheel vehicles?
I am getting ready to make a big change and would like to try it.
Thank you.
Well, I’m not 100% sure since I haven’t tried one in a 2WD vehicle yet, but from what I’ve heard they are quite snappy on engagement – great for 4WD vehicles but not so great for 2WD. In my 2WD buggy and truck, I like my clutch to have some feel to it so I can manage the throttle easier without having to fight the initial, high-grip engagement some clutches have.
I’m getting my Baja 5T ready for the season’s racing and was thinking about ordering one of these to give it a try. If that happens I’ll post my findings. Sorry I couldn’t be more help.
