Slippery Savage Center Drive

The RC Doctor - Return

Slippery Savage Center Drive

Question:
Hi Doc,
I have a question about the drivetrain of my HPI Savage XS Flux. Sometimes when I am enjoying my drive, it is cut short by a weird issue involving the center driveline. Sometimes the drive cup that keys into the rear differential slides out by just a millimetre or two, which causes the pin that keys into the bevel gear to slide just barely out of the slot in the gear. I’ve tried supergluing it in place (bad idea). Any ideas?

Thanks
Jeff M.

Answer:
Hey Jeff.
HPI’s Savage Flux XS is one of the funnest vehicles in my stable. Not only is it compact enough to take just about anywhere, it’s ridiculous fast! Whenever I break it out at any event I attend, people are always amazed at how much power and how fast that little truck is. Heck, I’M amazed at how much power (and abuse) it can actually handle…and that’s on a 2S pack. When I finally get around to throwing a 3S in…oh boy. I think just doing that alone has sold many a newcomer on the XS!

To solve your problem, there are two things you can try. First, you can take a couple of red o-rings (the kind you use in the shocks) and put those in the drive cups before you insert the dogbone. This will help keep the dogbone from moving front-to-back, keeping the drive cup in place. Secondly, you can find some small pieces of foam and cut them down to size and use those instead of the o-rings. They will serve the same purpose. Be careful, however, not to make them to thick or it will bind the dogbone and drivetrain!

Good luck! Keep tearing it up with your XS Flux!
