Leave it to Google to come up with a very cool idea on how to use a drone to deliver a package. In this article over at www.qz.com, they make note that Google has procured a few patents that will make drone deliveries a simple process.
One of these ideas is that there is really no reason for the drone to land – it simply flies to its destination, lowers the package down on a tether and drops the package off, recoils the tether and flies off. This keeps the drone high enough in the air to avoid making contact with anything on the ground – dogs, vehicles … humans! Onboard sensors would allow the drone to keep tabs on its surroundings, and a human (or humanoid) voice could give anyone around it an audible signal if they’re too close or if the package was safe to approach.
It’s really quite interesting and, if you’d like to read more, you should really head over to the Quartz site to read the article in it’s entirety. In the meantime, get ready – the FAA could open the door for drone deliveries as early as this year!
