Review: Vision Racing Products 1:10 Ultra Shock Stand

Review: Vision Racing Products Ultra Offroad Shock Stand

Simple Design, High-Tech Look!

One of the things I like most about RC is building the cars. I love the technical aspect of it, the hands-on work it takes and the progression to the final product. That being said, I have to admit that I’m not a fan when it comes to assembling the shocks; I’m not sure what it is but when I get to that part of the build there’s always a brief moment where I want to do, well, anything else.

When I finally break down and get back to work, it’s always nice to have a good shock stand available during the build. While browsing the web during my shock boycott, I found this cool looking Ultra Shock Stand from Vision Racing Products. Let’s take a closer look at what comes in the package.

The Ultra Shock Stand comes unassembled and tucked nicely in a black, velvety pouch. There are 3 separate pieces that are all CNC-machined from 6061 aluminum; the base, the standoff and the top. The base is 82x80mm in size and provisions for four shocks shafts (in 3 and 3.5mm sizes), a magnet for holding metal parts (screws, washers, etc) and two padded pockets that can hold additional items (shock caps, pistons, etc). The 70mm standoff has holes at each end to connect the top and base (the screws are included). The top has four holes in it that can accept up to a 16mm shock body and are labeled for easy identification; left rear, left front, right front and right rear. Finally, VRP includes two of their colored stickers.

The first task at hand is to assemble the shock stand which literally takes about 30 seconds. Once complete the stand is sturdy and very stable; you’re going to have to really hit this hard to knock it over. Since I was headed to the track in the next couple of days, I figured I’d use this stand during the rebuild of my Team Associated B6D dampers.

Once unassembled, the shocks fit nicely down inside the holes on the top. VRP has also cut out a large opening in the bottom of the stand, allowing you to rest the shocks in an upside-down configuration so any used oil can drip right out – just be sure to place a towel under the stand to catch the oil. As mentioned before, there are 3 and 3.5mm holes for your assembled shock shafts and room on the pads for your caps, screws, eyelets, washers, etc – the space gets a bit crowded so I suggest only storing the smaller stuff on there.

There is one more cool feature that I have yet to mention. This stand is designed for 1:10 scale shocks, however there is a 1:8 scale version available. Both use the same base and standoff, which means if you’re a 1:10 and 1:8 scale racer, all you need to do is purchase the 1:8 scale top (for an additional $10) and you’ve got a great shock stand for both classes!

Conclusion
While I try and do most of my maintenance at home before I hit the track, there are times where something like a shock stand comes in handy at the track. That means portability is key, and the Vision Racing Products Ultra Shock Stand fits that bill. It assembles and breaks down in seconds and the travel pouch is a fantastic addition, allowing easy storage in your pit box. The Ultra Shock Stand is now a permanent part of my travel package!
