One of the most prestigious events in the world and the first major event of the year, the Reedy International Off-Road Race of Champions has become a must-attend event for the top racers from around the world as well as aspiring racers looking to make a name for themselves and continue their advance up the competition ladder.
The 2WD and 4WD Open Classes comprise the bulk of the Reedy Race entries and are highly competitive, with 100 drivers competing in each class. Not only is the prestigious title on the line, but the winner of each Open class is given the opportunity to compete in the following year’s Invitational class.
Reedy factory drivers Rob Gillespie and Carson Wernimont were the class of the field going 1-2 in both 2WD Open and 4WD Open qualifying. Smooth and powerful Reedy Sonic 540 modified motors and high-capacity Reedy LiPo batteries powered the pair to their front-row A-Main starting positions.
With victories in the double 10-minute A-Main events in 2WD Open, Wernimont clinched the coveted title and the opportunity to return to the Invitational class in 2014. After a rough A1, Gillespie fought back with a second place finish in A2 to finish in second overall. Turning the tables, Rob Gillespie went wire to wire from the pole position in both 4WD A-Main events to claim first place overall and the Invitational class entry for 2014. Wernimont drove two nearly flawless A Mains to finish second overall with another Reedy factory driver, Max Flurer, finishing third overall to give the podium sweep to the Reedy team.
Thanks to all the racers and the WCRC facility for another great Reedy Race!
