Dual Rate Discovered

Dual Rate Discovered

Question:
Hey Doc,
I am rebuilding a Kyosho Vanning buggy and regifting it to my 38 year old son – I originally gave it to him when he was 10.

I have a question about the transmitter/servos: Transmitter set is a Kyosho Pulsar 2001 with receiver and servos mounted in buggy. I have all the parts on workbench but when I test it, the servos only travel approx 1/8 (or less) of a turn in either direction. Is that normal?? Seems the speed control (to the carb) does not travel far enough to give me full throttle. Note: the Pulsar 2001 is a brand new item I picked up off eBay.

I appreciate your help.

Answer:
Hey Rudy.
I’m very interested in seeing your rebuilt Vanning, especially with the somewhat vintage Pulsar radio system!!!! What a great gift! Your son is very lucky to get such a vintage piece of Kyosho history.

To fix your problem, there’s two possible solutions here, both of them being very easy. First, there should be a Dual Rate dial on the transmitter. It might be labeled Dual Rate, D/R or something like that. Make sure that is turned all the way up. Dual Rate adjusts the ‘throw’ of the servo arm, allowing you to tune your vehicle’s steering right from the transmitter. This is a helpful function if your car or truck has to much steering and you don’t want to walk off the driver’s stand to fix it.

Second, check to make sure the End Points are correctly adjusted. This feature is also included on almost every transmitter and will probably be labeled as EPA. Since the transmitter is new, I’m assuming it came with a manual. Check this to see how to set the EPA on this radio.

Good luck with the gift!
