What The Heck is Motor Timing?

Question:
What’s up, Doc-
I am new to the RC world. I have a 3Racing Sakura FGX, Yeah Racing 10T motor, Yeah Racing 35A Brainpower ESC and programming card. I’ve got the standard gear set-up that came with the kit and a 48P 18 tooth gear on the motor. The reason I’m writing is because I’ve had a hard time figuring the timing set up offered through a programming card. This ESC offers a range of timing settings from 0 degrees to 26.25 degrees, but I don’t have the foggiest idea what these settings do.

Maybe you can help. The motor is powerful and I had to dial down the Punch/Start Mode from a standstill (set it at Level 3 out of possible Level 9), but what does the timing do? I currently have it set at 0* which seems to limit rear wheel spin.

Thanks
Marco

Answer:
Hey Marco.
Most ESC’s allow you some sort of programming directly from the unit, whether it’s to change the Punch Control, Forward/Reverse/Brake settings or even the timing. Some even allow you to set ‘boost’. This can be a bit tedious at times as you have to push buttons and count blinking lights; that’s where the programming card is handy. Good choice on that purchase!

Timing is a sensitive setting. At 0 degrees, the motor is typically at it’s most efficient state and speed is achieved based soley on gearing. When you up the timing, you up the RPM’s the motor can build. This means the motor will go faster (using the same gearing), but you will lose torque. You will also build more heat in the motor since it’s now working alot harder. So, there is a fine line here between timing and gearing, a trick that takes a little practice to figure out.

If you’re racing, my suggestion is to find a good gearing for the track you are on. You can then use the timing to fine tune the speed. Remember, timing equals heat, and heat can kill a motor. To much and you’ll be in the market for a new motor. Just keep an eye on the motor temp and you’ll be good to go!
